How To Get Wedding Flowers You Want and Stay Within Budget
If you are a couple planning a Dallas Wedding in 2021 or 2022 you are not alone in experiencing sticker shock at the high cost of wedding flowers. Florists in Dallas Ft Worth and around the country are reeling at the increased price of flowers on the wholesale level.
Why has the cost of flowers increased so much the past year?
“The Florist” explains the reasons-
70% of the flowers sold in the U.S. are grown in Columbia and Ecador -flower production has been drastically reduced due to Covid.
Too many buyers – too few flowers.
Three peak flower buying days within five weeks.
Weather conditions causing shortfalls that can’t be replaced quickly.
Price increase on sundries due to higher manufacturing costs incurred by social distancing/reduced staffing levels.
Lack of freight space with shipping costs doubling and tripling in price.
“As with any commodity supply and demand has always played a role in flower pricing. In the last 12 months that has been made far, far worse due to Covid and the global impact on the flower growing world. As a result, flower prices have been rising throughout the world for the last few months, reaching one of the highest points this week and which impacts on every florist and flower vendor, wherever they are.
Since March 2020 the return to full production has been very slow and the world is nowhere near back to normal supply levels.
Growers have either not had the confidence to grow in the same quantity, physically can’t grow because Mother Nature requires more time or, in the case of countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya, the ability to ship product isn’t the same as there hasn’t been enough freight space; many flowers are shipped as belly fillers on passenger flights and there haven’t been many of those due to Covid!
In addition, in the first, always more expensive, first quarter weather has impacted all major growing areas adding to the problem; for example, in the UK 1.5 million tulips from one British grower didn’t happen because it was too cold, growers in Holland lost crops due to snow destroying greenhouses, and whilst Colombia and Kenya had good conditions, Ecuador saw production slow due to inclement weather conditions.
At the same time and since those early days of the pandemic, the global flower industry has seen an unprecedented demand for its product as families and friends use floral gifts to connect with each other when they couldn’t physically be together.
Demand has consistently outstripped supply throughout the world as flowers and plants literally filled the distance between loved ones
As a result, flower prices are rising everywhere.
Dixie Does Vintage shares some suggestions on how to stretch your Dallas Ft Worth wedding flower budget.
Be flexible, many flowers only bloom at certain times of the year. Choose blooms that are in season. Ask you florist or do your own research if you are planning on DIY’ing your wedding flowers.
Splurge on the details and consider DIY for the rest. Use a professional florist to make the bouquets and boutonnieres but DIY the centerpieces yourself. Bouquets and boutonnieres are a challenge to make if you don’t have any experience with flowers. Using an experienced wedding florist alleviates the stress factor of them being front and center in your wedding photos.
Instead of using large centerpieces on your wedding reception tables use collections of interesting bud vases . Dixie Does Vintage has an extensive selection of unique vintage brass bud vases, contemporary brass bud vases, ceramic and colored glass bud vases that you can rent and DIY your wedding flowers.
Go minimal by using fewer and smaller arrangements. Our brass bud vase collection allows you to show off each individual bloom to perfection. Each vase is unique and we recommend using different shapes, heights, and sizes on your tables. Our bud vases look great with any color palette and one or two beautiful blooms in them.
If your going for a more modern look use our collection of white ceramic vases.
